“All we like SHEEP have gone ASTRAY; we have TURNED every one to his OWN way; and the LORD hath LAID on HIM the INIQUITY of us ALL. He was OPPRSSEDd, and he was AFFLICTED, yet he OPENED NOT his MOUTH: he is brought as a LAMB to the SLAUGHTER, and as a SHEEP before her shearers is DUMB, so he OPENETH NOT his MOUTH. He was TAKEN from PRISON and from JUDGMENT: and WHO shall DECLARE HIS generation? for HE WAS CUT OFF OUT OF THE LAND OF THE LIVING: for the TRANSGRESSION of MY people was he STRICKEN.” (Isa 53:6-8)
Did you know that this passage of scripture is speaking of the Messiah that was to come? Did you know the word Messiah means anointed? Most of the Jews do not believe that their prophesied Messiah has come yet? In the book of Daniel the Messiah is prophesied about again but most of the Jews believe this word Messiah should have been translated anointed believing it refers to Cyrus king of Peria. “Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut;” (Isaiah 45:1) The prophecy of Daniel reads, “Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.” (Dan 9:25-27) It was Cyrus that made the decree. “Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying, Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD God of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? The LORD his God be with him, and let him go up.” (2 Chron 36:22-23) However, if you look closer at the prophecy of Daniel you will see that it is not speaking of Cyrus king of Persia but of Jesus the Messiah. Notice the same wording from Daniel and Isaiah. “And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary”. This Messiah was “cut off” even as spoken in Isaiah concerning the Messiah. “He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.” (Isa 53:8) The significance of this is huge as the Prophet Daniel is prophesying how many years it would be before the prophesied Messiah was to come it was also prophesying of a covenant that would leave seven years left unfulfilled which would be referring to the time of the end better known as the tribulation period even though the tribulation is actually the last three and one half years. If you do away with this passage of scripture, you not only do not see that Jesus is the Messiah in reference but you also don’t see that there are seven years left to fulfill and thus you would not be looking for what has been termed the seven year tribulation period of which is actually only three and one half years long. When speaking with a Jewish believer of the Old Testament that doesn’t believe their Messiah has come this is the additional proof they need that God could use to open their eyes. In both places “shall Messiah be cut off” “for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.” (Isa 53:8)
