Job 1:1-22
1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.
Job was a righteous man! Job was perfect and upright! Job was one that feared God! And Job was a man that eschewed evil!
2 And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
3 His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
Job was a rich man! Job was the greatest of all the men of the east! Yet Job was a righteous man! Job was perfect and upright! Job was one that feared God! And Job was a man that eschewed evil!
4 And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
5 And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
Job had seven sons and three daughters! Job loved his family! Job sanctified his family with burnt offerings according to the number of them all! Job was one that feared God! And Job was a man that eschewed evil!
6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
God asked satan if he had considered his servant Job! Describing him to satan that there is none like him in the earth! A perfect and an upright man! One that fears God! And eschews evil!
Can God say the same for you? Are you perfect and upright before God? Are you one that fears God? Do you eschew evil? Can God trust you enough to ask satan if he has considered you?
9 Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
The accuser of the brethren has asked God does Job fear God for nought? Then the accuser of the brethren says to God you made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. Then the accuser of the brethren of whom God asked, “Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil” declares that this man Job of whom God has said there is none like him in the earth that if you (God) put forth your hand now, and touch all that he has, he will curse you to your face!
The devil is a liar! He “was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.” (Jn 8:44)
12 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
God gave satan permission to attack all that Job had, only upon himself satan could not put forth his hand! “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” (1 Cor 10:13) Do you believe it? Do you believe that God is faithful? And that he who will not suffer you to be tempted above that you are able? That God will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that you may be able to bear it? Be not confused! “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren.” (James 1:13-16)
13 And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house:
14 And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:
15 And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
16 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
17 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
18 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house:
19 And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
Listen carefully! At the same time these events in Job’s life took place! Job’s sons and daughters being ten were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
Job was not able to offer up burnt offerings according to the number of them all! Job was not able to sanctify them in case they had sinned, and cursed God in their hearts! Job knowing that God knew that he did this for them continually! Now Job not only lost his ten children all at once but now has no idea if they were ready to meet the Lord or not! They may very well have sinned against God and woke up in hell!
Job lost all of his riches at the same time! Job’s reputation of a man under God’s judgments was about to come upon him! Many of Job’s servants were also killed that same day! God allowed satan to use the Sabeans and the Chaldeans to rob Job of his riches while slaying his servants! The fire of God fell from heaven, and burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them! While a great wind from the wilderness was allowed to smote the four corners of the eldest brother’s house that killed all ten of Job’s children! God allowed satan to have power over all that Job had except that he could not touch Job!
This question is constantly being asked in one form or another. Why did God allow this? Why did God allow this tornado to kill all these people? Why did God allow my children to die? Why did God allow satan to attack my family? God is just, faithful, upright, and righteous! God is Sovereign! God is all powerful! God works all things after the counsel of his own will! “See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand. For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever.” (Deut 32:39-40)
Is it God’s fault that mankind disobeyed him? “And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” (Gen 2:16-17) “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” (Num 23:19) “Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.” (Ezek 18:4)
Is God unjust because mankind disobeyed him? Must God give account of himself to man? “Remember this, and shew yourselves men: bring it again to mind, O ye transgressors. Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:” (Isa 46:8-10) “Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?” (Rm 9:20)
“Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.” (Psa 100:3-5)
It is man that must give account to God. “But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” (Mt 12:36-37)
“Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things. But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat. And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man. Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.” (Gen 9:3-6)
“Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Rm 5:18-21)
20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,
21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
Job was a righteous man! Job was perfect and upright! Job was one that feared God! And Job was a man that eschewed evil! Job sinned not! Job did not charge God foolishly! Job rather worshipped God! Job said in wisdom with understanding, “Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”
Did the battle end there? Did Job give up on God? Did Job turn his back on God? Did Job also walk away? Did Job curse God?
Job 2:1-10
1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.
2 And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
3 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.
God asks satan again if he had considered his servant Job! Describing him to satan again that there is none like him in the earth! A perfect and an upright man! One that fears God! And eschews evil! Then God continues and tells satan, and still he holds fast his integrity! Although you moved me against him, to destroy him without a cause! Can God trust you enough to ask satan if he has considered you? Will you hold fast your integrity and continue to fear God and eschew evil while remaining perfect and upright before God? Even after losing your family members? Even after losing your riches?
4 And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.
“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.” (Mt 16:24-27) Some exchange their soul for a morsel of meat as did Esau! Others for their next hit or next fix! Others for a movie! Still others for vain philosophy, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ! And others after any number of vain behaviors and conversations of men!
5 But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.
6 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.
The accuser of the brethren now tells God after finding that his attack upon Job had failed, skin for skin, yea, all that a man has will he give for his life! He then asks God for permission that God would put forth his hand now upon Job, and touch his bone and his flesh, then claims that Job will then curse God to his face! And God said unto satan, behold, he is in your hand; but save his life. Can God say to satan that you are in his hand, but save his life? Will you remain perfect and an upright man! One that fears God! And eschews evil! One who will hold fast your integrity even after losing your riches and even your family members!
7 So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.
8 And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.
Job was in a lot of pain! Job was hurting all over his body! Job had to inflict more pain upon his body to scrape off the boils! That were from the sole of his feet unto the crown of his head! This also taking place after the loss of all ten of his children of whom he did not have the opportunity to offer burnt sacrifices for as he did continually when they ate and drank wine together just in case they had sinned, and cursed God in their hearts! And also after losing all his riches and many of his servants being killed!
9 Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.
10 But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.
Now Job’s wife tells him to curse God and die! Nevertheless Job said to her that she speaks as one of the foolish women speaks! Job asks the question, “What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this did not Job sin with his lips!
Job lost his children! Job lost his riches! Job lost many of his servants that were killed! Job’s health was in decline while his body was full of boils while he scraped them off with a potsherd! His wife being discouraged told him to curse God and die!
However, God did more than take away from Job although satan moved God against him, to destroy him without cause. God gave Job his testimony! It’s in the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perishes, though it be tried with fire, that your love for God is tested! Your trust in God is tested! In your temptations your walk with God and your integrity is tested! That your testimony is given! This is given in your sufferings along with being partakers of Christ’s sufferings! In these sufferings of Christ that we are being made partakers of, even as our father Abraham was, we are made joint-heirs with Christ through the promised seed of Abraham, being Christ, where we will receive the promised inheritance if we faint not! For he is faithful that promised!
Even when God takes away God gives you your testimony!
James 5:10-11
10 Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.
11 Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.
1 John 5:3-4
3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
Romans 3:24-26
24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
Revelation 12:10-11
10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly! Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him!
Job 19:23-27
23 Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were printed in a book!
24 That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever!
25 For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:
26 And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:
27 Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.
